Softball To Face UAB In Opening Round Of C-USA Championship

May 7, 2006 IRVING, Texas - East Carolina won six straight C-USA contests to close out the regular season and earn the No. 5 seed at the 2006 Conference USA Championship that Tulsa will host from May 11-13 at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex. The Pirates completed a three-game sweep on the road at UCF on Sunday to finish with a 13-11 record. Tulsa blanked Southern Miss, 4-0, on Sunday to claim the 2006 Conference USA regular season softball crown. One of five newcomers to the league this season, The Golden Hurricane took two-of-three from Southern Miss to finish at 15-8 and earn the No. 1 seed. Marshall, who was off this weekend, Houston and UAB all finished with identical 15-9 records to tie for second place in the league standings. The Thundering Herd earned the No. 2 seed by virtue of owning a combined 4-2 record against the Cougars and Blazers. Houston will be the No. 3 seed after posting a 3-3 record against Marshall and UAB, while the Blazers will be the No. 4 seed after going 2-4 against the respective clubs. Southern Miss earned the No. 6 seed for the second straight year, despite its 4-0 loss to the Golden Hurricane on Sunday. The Golden Eagles finished at 11-13, a half-game in front of Memphis (10-13), who also lost on Sunday falling, 3-1, to Houston. A Memphis win would have put the Tigers in the championship. Saturday's championship game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CST and will be carried live on CSTV. The winner of the six-team championship will earn the league's automatic bid the NCAA Championship.
