Softball Falls To UAB In Game One Of Conference USA Tournament

The East Carolina Softball Team (38-25, 10-13 C-USA) fell to the UAB Blazers (37-20, 14-10 C-USA) this morning at the Conference USA Softball Tournament by a score of 2-1. The game was played at the USF Softball Complex in Tampa, Fla.

The Pirates took the early lead in the first when Beth Bridger hit a single to right field driving in Kristin Johnson . The Pirates would end the inning with only one run, sending UAB to the plate. The Blazers would not score in the first, and leave one runner on base in the inning.

The next two innings would remain scoreless for both teams. It was in the fourth that UAB first got on the board. With one runner on base, Kai Paul went yard for the Blazers, taking the lead for the first time 2-1.

It was three up and three down for East Carolina in the second through the fifth innings, and the Pirates found themselves unable to add any points to the board. In the sixth inning, ECU had runners on first and second when Amber Gill popped up on a bunt to the first baseman. Kristin Johnson was caught too far down the line and was out on the play before she was able to get back to first base.

The Pirates held UAB in the bottom of the sixth, and headed into the seventh inning down by one. East Carolina would be unable to score in the seventh, and the Blazers would take the win 2-1.

Megan Stephenson was the winning pitcher for UAB, improving to 15-10 on the season. She pitched seven innings, striking out six batters, walking none, and allowed only one run scored. Nicole Bacon was credited with the loss for East Carolina. She dropped to 22-16 on the year, striking out four batters, walking none, and allowing two runs scored.

East Carolina will next play tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. The Pirates will face the loser of the Louisville vs. South Florida game which begins at 1:00 p.m.
