Paisley, Sumner Named NCCSIA All-State
June 10, 2010
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Junior pitcher Toni Paisley and senior second baseman Charina Sumner have been named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) University Division All-State Softball Team, according to an announcement by the organization Thursday. The selection is the second for Paisley as she was an honoree her freshman year and the first for Sumner.
NCCSIA selects all-state teams in the university (NCAA Division I) and college (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, softball and baseball. More than 500 student-athletes have been recognized on all-state teams since 2003.
Paisley’s honor continues her post-season awards haul as she was a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Third-Team All-America selection last week after repeating as a NFCA All-Mideast First-Team member, the Conference USA Pitcher-of-the-Year and a First-Team All-C-USA selection in May.
In 2010, the Lakewood, Calif., native established the single-season East Carolina record with 356 strikeouts while posting a 31-11 record. Paisley guided the Pirates to their first C-USA regular season title after going 13-2 with a 0.52 earned run average and 12 solo or combined shutouts in league play.
ECU also picked up its first C-USA Tournament title with Paisley being named the most valuable player. She went 3-0 and did not allow an earned run in 19 innings while striking out 20 at the league event in Houston, Texas. The tournament championship led to C-USA’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, where Paisley helped the Pirates advance to the regional final for the first time in program history. While at the Austin Regional, she eliminated the host Texas Longhorns with a 1-0, 10-strikeout performance that moved the Pirates into the championship contest against BYU.
In addition to Paisley, Sumner played a key role in East Carolina’s championship season. She was an All-Conference USA Second-Team member, a C-USA All-Academic Team pick and a CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Third-Team honoree.
The Kailua, Hawai’i, native led the team in hits (64), doubles (14) and triples (5), while standing second in batting average (.332), slugging percentage (.503), runs scored (37) and walks (22). She produced a team-best 15 multiple-hit games and added seven multi-RBI contests.
In league games, she paced the Pirates with a .284 batting average and 19 hits. Sumner concluded her career at the Austin Regional, batting .455 with three doubles and two runs scored. For the season, her 64 hits were the second most in C-USA and she ranked 10th in the league in runs scored.
In the all-time rankings, Sumner’s 17 triples are the fourth most in East Carolina and third most in C-USA history. In the Pirate career record book, she is fifth in hits (235), sixth in runs scored (141) and ninth in steals (63).
