Jan. 19, 2013
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Senior tandem Danielle Terpko and Yilian Zhang's 8-6 victory over Jennifer Ansari and Claire Cox in a No. 2 doubles match earned the Pirates' opening point that eventually proved to be the difference in East Carolina's season-opening 4-3 non-conference women's tennis win over Appalachian State Saturday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex. The Mountaineers, who defeated North Carolina A&T 7-0 in their opener Friday, fell to 1-1. Terpko and Zhang's clinching triumph followed an 8-3 decision posted by Nicole LaDuca and Neena Wanko against Mackenzie LaSure and Ellie Linsell at the No. 1 slot. In singles play, the Pirates picked up victories at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 positions as Zhang rolled past Ansari (6-0, 6-1), Melis Tanik blanked Brianna Armellino (6-0, 6-0) and Terpko dismissed Gabby Gabriel (6-3, 6-4), respectively. Appalachian State used wins by Linsell over Wanko (6-3, 7-5) at No. 1, Cox over LaDuca (6-3, 6-2) at No. 3 and Jessica Thaggard over Dana Gray (7-6, 6-1) at No. 6 to capture the other three matches. The Pirates will return to action on Jan. 31 when they travel to Raleigh to battle NC State beginning at 4 p.m. EAST CAROLINA 4, APPALACHIAN STATE 3
