BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- The East Carolina women's tennis team swept the doubles point and later secured a 4-3 non-conference triumph over Gardner-Webb with three straight-set singles wins by Brooke Walter, Hannah Priest and Tamara Sachs Saturday afternoon at the Webb Tennis Facility. ECU improved its record to 2-0 on the season while the Lady Bulldogs remained winless at 0-3. The Lady Pirates quickly built a lead and clinched the doubles point when the first-seeded tandem of Alex Smith and Brooke Walter posted an 8-5 victory over Rita Gouveia and Laura Kriett. Jessica Cook and Mireia Gol opened pairs play with an 8-1 win over Kasey Ellis and Monica Walser before Tamara Sachs and Varinia Soler closed out the action with a 9-8 triumph against Jenny Gomez and Amy Beavers. In singles play, the two teams split six matches with East Carolina picking up victories at the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 flights. Walter defeated Gouveia (6-3, 6-2), Hannah Priest handled Beavers (6-3, 6-0) and Sachs earned a 7-5, 6-1 decision over Ellis to account for the Lady Pirates' tallies. Gardner-Webb used wins by Kriett over Cook (6-7, 7-5, 10-7) at No. 1, Gomez over Gol (6-4, 5-7, 10-7) at No. 2 and Walser over Luiza Borges (6-4, 5-7, 10-8) at No. 4 to capture the other three matches.
