NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion tallied the doubles point and added four singles wins to down visiting East Carolina, 5-2, in non-conference women's tennis action Wednesday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center.
The setback dropped the Lady Pirates' early spring season record to 2-2, while the Monarchs captured their second-straight victory and improved to 5-2.
Old Dominion claimed the opening point by using doubles triumphs at the No. 1 and No. 3 slots. Joanna Dobrowolska and Nadine Fahoum blanked Jessica Cook and Audrey LePottier 8-0, while Irina Dementyeva and Diana Ivanova produced an 8-2 win over Natalie Collins and Tamara Sachs. East Carolina halted the sweep by closing out pairs play with an 8-5 victory by Petra Vogel and Yilian Zhang over Marija Citic and Juliana Pires at No. 2.
The Monarchs pushed their lead to 5-0 with consecutive two-set triumphs at the No. 1, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions before Cook and Collins improved their singles record to a combined 4-2 this spring with a pair of three-set wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots, respectively. Cook dismissed Dobrowolska 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 while Collins rallied back for a 3-6, 6-4, 13-11 victory over Dementyeva.
The Lady Pirates will enjoy a 10-day rest before opening its 2010 home schedule with a doubleheader against Charleston Southern (10:00 a.m.) and Mount Olive (2:30 p.m.) on Feb. 13 at the ECU Tennis Complex.
