Feb. 15, 2007
DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson women's tennis squad swept six singles matches in straight sets and garnered the doubles point during a 7-0 non-conference victory over East Carolina Thursday afternoon at the Knobloch Tennis Center.
The setback was the Lady Pirates' third straight on the road and dropped their spring dual match record to 8-5 while the Wildcats improved to 6-3.
The Wildcats opened the match by capturing the doubles point as Virginia Berry and Teresa Wang defeated Anca Dumitru and Varinia Soler at No. 1, 8-3. The No. 2 tandem, Lora Dushanova and Michele Fanney scored an 8-3 win over Luiza Borges and Mireia Gol while Meredith Skeeters and Kim Whelan posted an 8-4 victory over Alex Smith and Brooke Walter at the No. 3 slot.
Davidson continued its strong play in the singles competition, winning all 12 possible sets in convincing fashion. The Lady Pirates' Gol, Soler and Hannah Priest each captured four games during opening set action in their respective matches at the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 positions, respectively. In addition, Borges booked a pair of three-game wins in both sets during a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Berry in a No. 2 matchup.
The Lady Pirates' non-conference matches at Elon and High Point, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, have already been postponed because of the forecast of unseasonably cold temperatures and no immediate make-up date has been announced.
ECU will try to return to action Feb. 23 when it hosts Coastal Carolina for a 1:00 p.m. match in Greenville.
