Lady Pirates Sweep Elon 7-0 In Home Opener

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Seniors Kirstin Buchanan and Gillie Bailey captured a tiebreaker 8-7 to win the doubles point for the Lady Pirates, paving the way for a 7-0 non-conference sweep over Elon Thursday afternoon at the East Carolina Tennis Complex. The victory improved East Carolina to 7-3 on the season while Elon dropped to 2-2. In other doubles action, sophomores Mireia Gol and Luiza Borges teamed to defeat Melissa Holland and Whitney Butcher 8-2 while and sophomore Alex Smith partnered with freshman Anca Dumitru to post an 8-2 triumph over Elizabeth Kernodle and Alli Benton. With the Lady Pirates leading 3-0, Bailey knocked off Kelly Fleck 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 singles position to clinch the early victory for ECU. Additional ECU singles wins were turned in by Dumitru at the No. 1 spot (6-3, 4-6, 1-0 over Evin Prelec), Gol at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0 over Kernodle), Buchanan at No. 4 (6-2, 6-2 against Holland), Borges at No. 5 (6-1, 6-1 versus Butcher) and Hannah Priest at No. 6, who handed Benton a 6-0, 6-4 setback.
