GREENVILLE, N.C. - UNC Greensboro tallied the doubles point and added four three-set singles wins to outlast East Carolina, 5-2, in non-conference women's tennis action Wednesday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
The setback dropped the Lady Pirates' early spring season record to 2-1, while the Spartans improved to 2-1.
UNC Greensboro claimed the opening point by using doubles triumphs at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots. Stephanie Macfarlane and Alex Whitehead ran past Jessica Cook and Audrey LePottier 8-1, while Lucy Dougherty and Niltooli Wilkins produced an 8-4 win over Natalie Collins and Petra Vogel. East Carolina halted the sweep by closing out pairs play with an 8-4 victory by the freshman tandem of Manon Bissat and Neena Wanko over Mikayla Rogers and Devon Sutherland at No. 3.
The Lady Pirates bounced back by taking a brief 2-1 lead on the strength of straight-set singles decisions by Vogel (6-2, 6-1 over Whitehead) at No. 2 and Collins (6-1, 6-1 over Dilara Yurtkuran) at No. 5 before the Spartans rallied with four-straight three-set wins. Wilkins, Macfarlane and Annette Rios each dropped the initial set at the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 spots before earning victories over Cook, LePottier and Yilian Zhang, respectively, while Dougherty closed out play with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 victory against Wanko.
