ECU Edges Liberty, Sweeps Barton

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina women's tennis overcame an early three match skid in singles play before rebounding to post a 4-3 victory over Liberty in the opening match of a split doubleheader Wednesday at the ECU Tennis Complex. The Lady Pirates completed the twinbill sweep by blanking Barton 7-0 in the nightcap.
Petra Vogel and Yilian Zhang paired up for an 8-3 doubles victory at the No.2 position to keep the Pirates competitive. An 8-4 triumph by Natalie Collins and Brooke Walter would clinch the point for ECU. East Carolina and Liberty split six singles matches as East Carolina captured the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 flights. The Lady Pirates' Vogel handed Fabriana Gouveia a 6-1, 6-4 setback at No. 3 and Walter defeated Carol Lobel Wahl 6-3, 6-1. Zhang earned a victory over Brittany Thomas 6-2,7-5 to finish the match.
Jordan Jenkins paced the Flames with the win over Audrey LePottier at the No.1 spot. Nadia Solomon-Burgess picked up a win at the No.2 position before Hanna Fick earned the last point for Liberty over Collins.
In the nightcap, East Carolina captured straight-set wins in all six singles matches and decisively tallied the doubles point over Barton. LePottier (No. 1), Jessica Cook (No. 2), Tamara Sachs (No. 3), Abby Richmond (No. 4), Kristin Gordon (No. 5) and Sheelah Iyengar (No. 6) each notched singles victories.
The shutout improved ECU's spring dual match record to 4-2 while the Bulldogs dropped to 0-2 on the season.
East Carolina will start a four-match road swing when it meets Appalachian State Friday afternoon in Boone, N.C.
