Lady Pirates Sail Past Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's tennis team secured the doubles point and used five singles wins to capture its third consecutive win in a 6-1 non-conference triumph over Appalachian State Friday afternoon at the Deer Valley Tennis complex. East Carolina took two in the doubles competition, which was highlighted by an 8-3 victory by Natalie Collins and Brooke Walter over Jennifer Ansari and Laura Janke at the No. 3 flight to earn the point. Jessica Cook and Audrey LePottier started ECU off with an 8-6 victory over Ellie Linsell and Olivia Stannard but the streak would be short-lived as The Mountaineers rebounded as Blakeley Bean and Gisela Fernandez rolled past freshman tandem Petra Vogel and Yilian Zhang 8-4. The Lady Pirates went on to capture five of their six singles matchups to secure the team victory. LePottier extended her spring record to 4-3 at the No.1 spot with a win over Linsell in three sets . After dropping the first set; Walter would earn the last point for the Pirates with a 3-6, 6-4,10-5 decision over Stannard. Other ECU singles wins included Cook's 6-7,6-3,6-3 victory over Ansari at No.2, Collins' 6-3,6-2 triumph over Carolina Mauch at No. 3 and Vogels 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Fernandez at No. 4. ASU's only singles triumph of the afternoon came in the No. 6 matchup as Bean (ASU) outlasted Zhang 6-1, 3-6, 10-4. With the victory, East Carolina improves to 5-2 while App State drops to 2-3. The Lady Pirates will continue their trip with a pair of matches in Chapel Hill, N.C. Saturday - facing off against the North Carolina at 10 a.m. before meeting Gardner Webb at 2:00 p.m.
