Pirates Outlast Campbell In Marathon Match, 4-3
Feb. 22, 2013
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Senior Abby Richmond rallied back from a second-set defeat and survived three match-point serves to record a 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 victory over Kirsten Renz in a No. 6 singles match and lift East Carolina to a 4-3 non-conference win over Campbell Friday at the ECU Indoor Tennis Facility.
The triumph, which took over seven hours to complete, was the Pirates' fourth in their last five outings and improved their spring dual match record to 5-2. Campbell dropped to 1-7 with the loss.
After East Carolina swept doubles play to tally the opening point, the Camels took three of the first four singles matches to take a 3-2 lead. Dana Gray's 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Lourdes Ross in a No. 5 battle helped the Pirates erase the deficit and set the stage for Richmond's clincher.
Only two of the six matches ended in straight sets as Campbell's Tamara Stanic downed Yilian Zhang 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 and ECU's Neena Wanko dismissed Natasha Afridi 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3 to give the Pirates a brief 2-1 edge. The Camels bounced back by using wins at No. 2 and No. 4 before Gray and Richmond rallied East Carolina from the bottom of the lineup.
Richmond and Wanko also provided ECU with a deciding doubles point after an 8-6 decision over Ros and Ana Maria Ortiz in a No. 2 matchup. Zhang and Melis Tanik opened pairs action with an 8-3 win against Campbell's No. 1 tandem of Afridi and Stanic.
East Carolina will close out its four-match homestand Saturday with a doubleheader against a pair of in-state foes. The Pirates will open the twinbill at the ECU Indoor Tennis Facility against Gardner-Webb at 10 a.m. before hosting Western Carolina at 3 p.m.
