Lady Pirate Tennis Edges Coastal Carolina 4-3

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's tennis team tallied the doubles point and later secured a 4-3 non-conference triumph over Coastal Carolina with a pair of three-set singles wins by Luiza Borges and Varinia Soler Friday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex. ECU improved its mark to 10-5 on the season while the Lady Chanticleers suffered their first loss of the year after opening the campaign with six straight victories. The Lady Pirates quickly built a lead and clinched the doubles point when the second-seeded tandem of Borges and Mireia Gol posted an 8-6 victory over Sarize Coetzee and Kimberely Webb. Alex Smith and Brooke Walter opened pairs play with an 8-1 win over Maria Camberos and Tina Petkova to take a 1-0 advantage. In singles play, the two teams split six matches with East Carolina picking up victories at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 flights. Gol defeated Coetzee (7-5, 6-3), Borges fought past Amy Pazahanick (6-0, 4-6, 6-1) and Soler outlasted Sofie Ahlberg (4-6, 7-6, 6-2) to account for the Lady Pirates' tallies. Coastal Carolina used triumphs by Hayley Rudman over Anca Dumitri (6-1, 6-4) at No. 1, Webb over Walter (6-2, 6-2) at No. 4 and Camberos over Smith (6-7, 6-2, 6-3) at No. 6 to capture the other three matches. East Carolina will take a week off before hosting Southern Conference member Wofford Saturday, March 3 beginning at 10:00 a.m. EAST CAROLINA 4, COASTAL CAROLINA 3
