SPARTANBURG, S.C. - East Carolina used four singles wins and a doubles sweep to post a 5-2 non-conference women's tennis victory over Wofford College Saturday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center.
The Pirates, who have captured wins in six of their last seven matches, improved to 8-3 on the year while the Terriers dropped to 1-6.
East Carolina opened the match by taking all three doubles battles to capture the opening point. Leading off for the Pirates was Petra Vogel and Yilian Zhang with an 8-3 victory over Stephanie Cox and Guinn Garcia at the No.2 position before Natalie Collins and Brooke Walter dismissed Sonia Anand and Sabrina Smyers 8-3. In the No.1 flight Jessica Cook and Audrey LePottier defeated Haley Baird and Lindsay Larkin, 8-4, to complete the sweep.
The Pirates wrapped up the triumph in singles play, winning four of six matchups. Vogel handled Larkin (6-0, 6-1) at No.2 and Zhang posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lucy Schermerhorn at No.6 before Cook and Collins added 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 and 6-4, 1-6, 6-0 victories over Smyers and Garcia at the No.1 and No. 3 slots, respectively.
Wofford’s two victories came at the No. 2 and No. 5 flights as Haley Baird defeated LePottier 6-4, 6-2 and Stephanie Cox outlasted Walter 6-4, 5-7, 6-0.
East Carolina will return to action Wednesday by traveling to UNC Wilmington for a 2 p.m. battle against the Seahawks.
