ECU Captures 5-2 Road Win At UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Visiting East Carolina won the doubles point and captured four of the last five singles matches to down host UNC Greensboro 5-2 in non-conference women's tennis action Friday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts. The victory extended ECU's season-opening win streak to eight straight while the Spartans fell to 1-5. East Carolina opened the match by capturing the doubles point as Luiza Borges and Mireia Gol defeated Jessica Eblen and Sarah Templeton 8-3 at the No. 3 flight before Alex Smith and Brooke Walter handed Alejandra Guerra and Valerie Behr an 8-6 loss at No. 1. The Lady Pirates continued their strong play in the singles competition, winning four of six matches. Varinia Soler opened the action by defeating Behr 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 before Gol and Borges added 6-0, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-3 victories over Britney Cloer and Eblen at No. 3 and 5, respectively. Tamara Sachs closed out the scoring for ECU by rallying back to defeat Courtney Akel 3-6, 6-2, 10-7 in a No. 6 matchup. The Spartans' pair of triumphs came at the No. 1 and No. 4 positions as Guerra dismissed Jessica Cook 6-1, 6-2 and Erica Zabkar rolled past Walter 6-2, 6-2. East Carolina will return home Wednesday, March 5 to face UNC Asheville and Winston-Salem State in a split doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. at the ECU Tennis Complex.
