Lady Pirate Tennis Blanks Appalachian State 7-0

BOONE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's tennis squad swept six singles matches and earned the doubles point to post a convincing 7-0 non-conference victory over Appalachian State Saturday afternoon at the Bob Light Courts.
The win was the Lady Pirates' fourth in the last five outings and improved their spring dual match record to 10-4. The Mountaineers suffered their second straight setback and fell to 4-2.
Freshman Anca Dumitru and senior Gillie Bailey both had to rally after suffering 7-5 first-set losses to record wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles slots. Dumitru fought back to earn a 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (4) triumph over Anja Gugger while Bailey took firm control of her match to log a 5-7, 6-0, 6-1 decision over Victoria Moody.
Sophomore Mireia Gol ran her spring mark to 10-2 and her overall slate to a team-best 21-5 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over ASU's Monica Tomas at the No. 3 position before senior Kirstin Buchanan cruised past Salem Kirven (6-2, 6-2) in a No. 4 matchup. Sophomore Luiza Borges (6-2, 5-7, 6-3 over Lyndsey Free) and freshman Presley Thomas (6-1, 6-4 over Kendall Graves) added wins at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
East Carolina used victories by tandems Bailey/Buchanan (8-5) and Borges/Gol (8-2) to give the Lady Pirates the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead prior to singles play.
After taking a week off, ECU will return to action Saturday, March 11 when it travels to Chapel Hill to battle North Carolina in a 3:00 p.m. match.
