RIO PIEDRAS, P.R. - The East Carolina women's tennis squad swept five singles matches in straight sets and earned the doubles point to post a 6-0 non-conference victory over Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras Monday afternoon.
The win, which also served as the Lady Pirates' second shutout of the season, improved ECU's overall spring dual match record to 5-8.
East Carolina opened the match by capturing the doubles point against the Gallitos, who compete as an independent at the NCAA Division II level. Tandems Dana Gray and Neena Wanko (8-0), along with Vanessa Fuleihan and Karling Watson (8-1), each rolled to impressive wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to clinch the first tally before Renata Bakieva and Natalie Collins closed out the action with an 8-4 decision against Angie Groche and Adriana Rodriguez.
The Lady Pirates continued their strong play in the singles competition, outscoring Rio Piedras a combined 60-3 in five of the six positions. Collins (No. 1), Yilian Zhang (No. 2), Danielle Terpko (No. 3), Gray (No. 4) and Abby Richmond (No. 5) all recorded multiple 6-0 or 6-1 set triumphs, while Fuleihan's No. 6 match against Carla Avilla was halted after the ECU sophomore logged a 6-1 victory in the opening frame.
East Carolina will travel to the western end of the island to face the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez Tuesday at 10 a.m., before closing out its trip with a neutral site meeting in Humacao against North Carolina Thursday.
