GREENVILLE, N.C. - Elon garnered a quick doubles point and produced straight-set singles wins at the top three positions of its singles lineup to post a shortened 4-0 non-conference victory over East Carolina on Thursday afternoon at the ECU Indoor Facility.
The Phoenix won their sixth-straight match to improve to 6-4, while the Pirates suffered their first setback in their last three outings to drop to 5-6.
Elon promptly extended a 1-0 lead after doubles play by capturing three singles meetings in convincing fashion. Frida Jansaker and Barbora Lazarova cruised to identical 6-1, 6-2 wins over Maria Storozheva and Emily Groeneveld at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively. Jordan Johnston followed with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Michelle Castro at No. 1 shortly thereafter to clinch the team triumph.
Because of the potential of hazardous wintry driving conditions for Elon, the match was stopped once the Phoenix secured their fourth point. The No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches featuring Dana Gray and Betsy Zurawel were halted. Gray was trailing 4-1 in her meeting with Bryn Khoury, while Zurawel led Taylor Casey 3-1 before play was stopped.
Johnston and Lazarova teamed up for an 8-3 win over Gray and Storozheva to open pairs action at No. 1 before Maria Camara Ruiz and Jansaker booked the opening tally by topping Castro and Groeneveld by a similar 8-3 margin at the No. 2 slot.
East Carolina will take a spring break trip to Humacao, Puerto Rico where it will face PR-Rio Piedras and Bryant next Monday and follow by battling Seton Hall and Robert Morris on Tuesday.
