March 7, 2012
MAYAGUEZ, P.R. - Although it played on the opposite side of the island Tuesday, the East Carolina women's tennis squad topped Monday's success by sweeping all six singles matches in straight sets and earning the doubles point in convincing fashion on the way to a 7-0 win over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez.
The victory against the Bulldogs, who like Monday's opponent, Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras, competes at the NCAA Division II level, improved ECU's spring match record to 6-8.
The Lady Pirates opened the action by capturing the doubles point as Renata Bakieva and Natalie Collins set the tone early with an 8-0 triumph versus Joanna Ortiz and Christine Raymond at the No. 2 slot. Abby Richmond and Karling Watson followed with an 8-1 decision over Mara Hernandez and Andrea Rivera at No. 3 before Danielle Terpko and Yilian Zhang closed out pairs play with an 8-2 win against Gabriela Rodridguez and Nicole Rosich.
East Carolina continued its run in singles, notching 6-0, 6-0 straight-set victories in four of six positions. Collins (No. 1), Bakieva (No. 2), Neena Wanko (No. 3) and Richmond (No. 5) all tallied shutouts, while Dana Gray and Watson posted 6-1, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-1 wins in No. 4 and No. 6 meetings, respectively.
ECU will close out its trip Thursday morning with a neutral site matchup against No. 13 North Carolina in Humacao.
