March 12, 2008
SAN JUAN, P.R. - North Carolina, ranked No. 11 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Poll, swept six singles matches in straight sets and garnered the doubles point during a 7-0 non-conference victory over No. 68 East Carolina Wednesday afternoon at the Palmas Del Mar Resort.
Although North Carolina (10-4) clinched the doubles point to open play by virtue of 8-6 and 8-4 victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, East Carolina (11-2) did record a win at No. 3 when seniors Luiza Borges and Mireia Gol handed the tandem of Meg Fanjoy and Linzee Mabrey an 8-7 setback after securing the nod in the tie-breaker.
The Tar Heels continued their strong play in the singles competition - dropping just 15 combined games in 12 total sets. Sophomore Varinia Soler provided the toughest competition before falling to UNC's Sanaz Marand 6-0, 7-5 in a No. 2 matchup while Brooke Walter (6-3, 6-1 loss at No. 4 to Sophie Grabinski) captured four games before falling in her respective match.
The Lady Pirates will play the last of three scheduled matches in Puerto Rico Thursday when they open Conference USA regular season play by facing UAB in another neutral site battle scheduled to begin at 12 noon.
