Lady Pirates Edge College of Charleston 4-3
March 19, 2007
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Alex Smith and Brooke Walter paired up for a pivotal 9-8 doubles victory while Varinia Soler and Luiza Borges each rallied to post key singles triumphs as East Carolina recorded a 4-3 non-conference win over the College of Charleston Monday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
The victory marked the Lady Pirates' sixth in the last seven outings and pushed their spring dual match record to 14-6. The Cougars fell to 8-4 with the setback.
After each squad had posted a doubles tally, Smith and Walter helped ECU earn the match's first team point by outlasting CofC's Holly Dowse and Anna Lee Evans 9-8 in a No. 3 battle, which included an 8-6 tie-breaker set.
The Lady Pirates and Cougars split six singles matches as East Carolina captured the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 flights.
Mireia Gol needed only two sets to cruise past Evans 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 but Soler and Borges each booked come-from-behind wins on their respective courts to help secure the victory. After taking the opening set 7-6 (16-14) in a No. 2 match against Link Leskosky, Soler dropped the next set 6-0 before rallying back for a decisive 6-2 triumph in the third frame. Borges suffered a 7-5 loss in the opener against Dowse but quickly regrouped to turn in consecutive 6-4 wins to take the No. 5 match.
The College of Charleston picked up wins at the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 slots as Chelsea Albertz defeated Anca Dumitru (7-5, 6-2), Laura Borze dispatched Walter (6-2, 6-3) and Amanda Becker handled Hannah Priest (6-2, 6-2).
East Carolina will return to action Friday, facing off against Conference USA foe Houston in a 10:00 a.m. neutral site matchup played at Charleston.
