Lady Pirates Top Gardner-Webb, 6-1

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Behind the strength of a doubles sweep and five straight-set singles victories, East Carolina posted a 6-1 non-conference win over Gardner-Webb Friday afternoon at the Webb Tennis Complex. The Lady Pirates (10-3) captured all three doubles matches in decisive fashion to snatch the first point from Gardner-Webb (8-9). Jessica Cook and Varinia Soler defeated Rita Gouveia and Laura Kreitt 8-4 at the No. 1 position, Rocio Cabanillas and Brooke Walter rolled past Tavenner Black and Jenny Gomez 8-1 at No. 2 and Natalie Collins and Tamara Sachs handed Amy Beavers and Kasey Ellis an 8-4 setback at No. 3. In ECU's five singles victories, Cook dismissed Kreitt 6-0, 7-5 at No. 1, Soler turned back Gomez 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2, Collins routed Gouveia 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3, Walter cruised past Beavers 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 and Sachs upended Black 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6. The Bulldogs' lone tally came as a result of Ellis' 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Cabanillas in a No. 5 matchup. The Lady Pirates will return to the court Saturday, squaring off against former Conference USA rival Charlotte beginning at 10 a.m. before resuming their four-match road swing next week with trips to Richmond and Liberty.
