Pirates Outlast Coastal Carolina 5-2

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina tallied the doubles point and added four singles wins, two in three-set fashion, to outlast Coastal Carolina, 5-2, in non-conference women's tennis action Friday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
The victory improved the Pirates' spring season record to 10-5, while the Chanticleers fell to 8-7.
ECU claimed the opening point by using doubles triumphs at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots. Melis Tanik and Yilian Zhang ran past Mikaela Davies and Alicia Robinson 8-4 at No. 2, while Nicole LaDuca and Neena Wanko produced an 8-6 win over Shelby Bates and Kourtney Kowal. Coastal Carolina halted the sweep with an 8-4 victory by the tandem of Dominique de Wit and Libby Scott over Dana Gray and Danielle Terpko at No. 3.
The Pirates extended their lead to 3-0 on the strength of straight-set singles decisions by Abby Richmond (6-2, 6-2 over de Wit) at No. 6 and Tanik (6-3, 6-3 over Davies) at No. 2 before clinching the match with Zhang's 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 triump over Bates at No. 3. Terpko made it 5-0 ECU by rallying past Kowal 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a No. 4 meeting before Coastal Carolina used a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 wins by Robinson and Scott at No. 5 and No. 1, respectively, to account for its two tallies.
The Pirates will return to action Saturday, hosting South Carolina State at 11 a.m. and North Carolina Central at 5 p.m. for a split doubleheader at the ECU Tennis Complex.
