Lady Pirate Tennis Stops UNCW, 5-2

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina swept the doubles point and captured four singles matches, two in convincing straight-set fashion, to down visiting UNC Wilmington, 5-2, in non-conference women's tennis action Thursday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex. ECU improved its overall record to 13-4 with the victory while UNCW had a four-match win streak snapped and now stands 13-6-1 on the season. Alex Smith and Brooke Walter defeated Lindsay Leblang and Kayla Schwenk 8-6 at the No. 1 slot to give the Lady Pirates the doubles point and a 1-0 lead after No. 3 tandem Hannah Priest and Varinia Soler posted an earlier 8-4 triumph over Hartley Collins and Priscilla Roberts. Fellow seniors Mireia Gol and Luiza Borges closed out pairs play with an 8-7 win over Lauren Isenhour and Melissa Wolf to push their doubles record to 7-1 this spring. East Carolina and UNC Wilmington split the first pair of singles matches as Walter ended Isenhour's perfect season and consecutive victory total at 18 with a 6-4, 6-1 win in a No. 4 matchup before the Seahawks' Chelsea Kahle handed Tamara Sachs a 6-3, 6-0 setback at No. 6. The Lady Pirates quickly answered by using a 6-0, 7-5 victory by Gol over Leblang at No. 3 before clinching the match on Borges' 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 triumph over Wolf at the No. 5 position. Soler followed by rallying past Schwenk 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 in a No. 2 battle for ECU's fifth tally while UNCW closed out the match by capturing the first-seeded matchup as Roberts outlasted Jessica Cook 3-6, 7-6, 6-2.
East Carolina will return to action Tuesday when it travels to Charleston, S.C. to meet the College of Charleston in a non-conference match scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. EAST CAROLINA 5, UNC WILMINGTON 2 |
