GREENVILLE, N.C. - UNC Wilmington used three straight-set singles wins after capturing the doubles point to post a shortened 4-0 non-conference victory over East Carolina Saturday afternoon at the ECU Indoor Facility.
The Seahawks (11-3) extended their winning streak to six in a row, while the Pirates (9-9) suffered their third consecutive setback.
UNCW quickly added to a 1-0 lead after doubles play by taking the top three slots in the singles lineup. Olga Blank and Annika Sillanpaa recorded 6-3, 6-0 and 7-5, 6-3 triumphs over Michelle Castro and Maria Storozheva at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively. Angie Sekely followed with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Melis Tanik at No. 1 to clinch the team victory.
Sekely and Alyssa Ritchie teamed up for an 8-2 win over Castro and Nicole LaDuca to open pairs action at No. 2 before the Pirates drew even after Dana Gray and Storozheva dismissed Blank and Christine Kharkevitch by an 8-3 count at the No. 1 position. The Seahawks bounced back to claim the first tally when Kelly Cameron and Miller Hales outlasted Emily Groeneveld and Tanik with an 8-6 decision at No. 3.
The No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches featuring Groeneveld, LaDuca and Gray were discontinued once UNCW secured the victory with its fourth point, per a pre-match coaches agreement.
East Carolina will continue its four-match homestand Tuesday when it hosts Richmond for a 2 p.m. first serve at either the ECU Indoor Facility or River Birch Tennis Center.
