GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina tallied the doubles point and added four singles wins, one in three-set fashion, to outlast Richmond 5-2 in non-conference women's tennis action Tuesday afternoon at the River Birch Tennis Center.

The victory improved the Pirates' spring season record to 10-9 and marked the 300th of head coach Tom Morris' 16-year career at ECU. The Spiders had their two-match win streak snapped and fell to 6-8 with the setback.

East Carolina claimed the opening point by using doubles triumphs at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. Michelle Castro and Nicole LaDuca edged Brittany Boys and Katya Salas 8-7 at No. 2, while Emily Groeneveld and Melis Tanik produced an 8-4 win over Denny Lamachia and Elizabeth Sims.

The Pirates extended their lead to 4-0 and clinched the team victory behind the strength of straight-set singles decisions by Tanik (6-2, 6-1 over Melissa Kandinata) at No. 2, Dana Gray (6-1, 6-4 over Emily Gitman) at No. 6 and Castro (7-6, 6-2 over Anna Abadias) at No. 1.

Groeneveld made it 5-0 ECU by rallying past Boys 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in a No. 4 meeting before Richmond used 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 and 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 wins by Sims and Salas at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively, to account for its two tallies.

East Carolina will close out its 2014 home schedule Saturday when it hosts Liberty (10 a.m.) and North Carolina Central (4 p.m.) in a split doubleheader at either the ECU Indoor Facility or River Birch Tennis Center.
