April 5, 2006
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The East Carolina women's tennis program ran its spring record to 17-7 after recording a non-conference doubleheader sweep with a 6-1 win over High Point and a 7-0 shutout victory against Barton College Wednesday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
The setbacks for the Panthers and Bulldogs dropped their records to 5-12 and 13-9, respectively.
In the opener against High Point, ECU posted straight-set wins in five of six singles matches and took all three doubles events. The Lady Pirates' tandem of Gillie Bailey and Alex Smith opened the action by cruising to an 8-1 victory over Sarah McDonough and Jody Wicks before HPU narrowed the margin to 9-8 and 8-6 finals in the No. 1 and No. 2 matchups.
Hannah Priest set the singles pace by blitzing Wicks 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 position before Bailey (No. 2), Mireia Gol (No. 3), Luiza Borges (No. 4) and Presley Thomas (No. 5) added wins to secure the triumph.
In the nightcap, ECU's top-seeded doubles pair of Borges and Gol put together an impressive 8-1 win over Kristia Cedeno and Meghan Lynch to spark the Lady Pirates to a doubles play sweep and a dominating performance in singles action that featured six consecutive straight-set victories. In fact, Thomas' 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Allison Cobb at the No. 3 position marked the closest match in singles play that saw East Carolina outscore Barton College 72-15.
The Lady Pirates will return to action again Thursday when they host UNC-Wilmington at the ECU Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m.
