GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's tennis squad split a pair of non-conference matches Saturday at the River Birch Tennis Center, falling to Liberty 4-0 in morning action before defeating North Carolina Central by a 6-1 score during the afternoon to successfully close out Senior Day.

In the opener against the Lady Flames (12-8), Cameron Richard and Valerie Thong's 8-6 victory (LU) over Emily Groeneveld and Melis Tanik in a No. 3 doubles matchup clinched the opening point and sparked a run of three straight-set singles wins for the team triumph.

Liberty's Belene Rivera, Nicole Wellman and Mariely Hassey downed Michelle Castro, Nicole LaDuca and Dana Gray at the No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 slots, respectively. The No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 matches, which all featured leads by Tanik, Maria Storozheva and Groeneveld, were discontinued once the Lady Flames secured the victory with their fourth tallly, per a pre-match coaches agreement.

In the afternoon tilt against N.C. Central (4-11), the Pirates captured five of six singles events to earn their 11th win of the season in their final home match.

After notching the doubles point, Groeneveld opened singles action by dismissing Ekaterina Nekrasova 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 before Gray added a 6-2, 6-3 win against Lynsey Cover 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6. Storozheva followed with a 6-4, 6-0 defeat of Tamara Jeremic at No. 4, LaDuca topped Mia Ramic 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5 and Tanik, the Pirates' only senior in the lineup, outlasted Rebecca Wood 7-6, 6-4 at No. 1 to close out ECU's scoring.

The Lady Eagles posted their only win at No. 2 when Aissa Muamba handed Castro a 6-3, 6-4 setback.

East Carolina will complete its 2014 regular season schedule next Saturday when it travels to Charlotte for a Conference USA match against the 49ers beginning at 1 p.m.
