Lady Pirates Rout Appalachian State, 7-0

BOONE, N.C. - East Carolina extended its winning streak to three straight in impressive fashion Thursday afternoon with a 7-0 non-conference victory over Appalachian State at the Rivers Street Tennis Courts. The Lady Pirates did not drop a set in all six singles matches and lost just nine games in a three-match doubles sweep. ECU opened the match by capturing the doubles point as Mireia Gol and Brooke Walter defeated Heather Prior and Monica Tomas at No. 2, 8-1. The No. 3 tandem, Tamara Sachs and Varinia Soler, scored an 8-3 win over Amanda Cash and Lindsay King while Jessica Cook and Luiza Borges posted an 8-5 victory over Anja Gugger and Laura Janke at the No. 1 slot. The Lady Pirates continued their strong play in the singles competition, winning all 12 possible sets. Cook and Soler earned 7-6, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-4 wins over Gugger and Tomas at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots, respectively, while Gol (6-2, 6-0) and Borges (6-3, 6-2) followed with triumphs at No. 3 and No. 4. Walter and Sachs closed out the scoring with 6-4, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-3 victories over Elizabeth Holland and Caroline Mauch at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions. East Carolina will return to action Saturday when it closes out regular season play by hosting South Carolina State at the ECU Tennis Complex beginning at 2 p.m. East Carolina will then prepare for the 2008 Conference USA Championship Tournament in Houston April 17-20.
