East Carolina Drops Home Finale To UNC Greensboro 5-2

GREENVILLE, N.C. - UNC Greensboro used four singles wins, three in straight-set fashion, and a doubles sweep to post a 5-2 non-conference women's tennis victory over East Carolina Wednesday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
The Spartans, who have won 10 of their last 12 matches, improved to 13-6 on the year while the Pirates fell to 12-10.
UNCG opened the action by taking all three doubles battles to capture the opening point. Soumeya Anane and Stephanie Falcon began pairs play with an 8-2 win over Abby Richmond and Danielle Terpko at the No. 3 position before Kayla Gammie and Annette Rios dismissed Melis Tanik and Yilian Zhang 8-3 at No. 2. In the No. 1 flight, Alex Whitehead and Niltooli Wilkins defeated Nicole LaDuca and Neena Wanko 8-5 to complete the sweep.
The Spartans wrapped up the triumph in singles play, winning four of six meetings. Whitehead snapped Tanik's eight-match win streak with 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2, Falcon posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Terpko at No. 4 before Wilkins clinched the fourth tally and team victory by downing Wanko 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1.
The Pirates' victories came at the No. 3 and No. 5 slots as Zhang defeated Rios 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 and LaDuca rallied past Gammie 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
East Carolina, which conducted Senior Day activities to recognize Richmond, Terpko and Zhang's last home appearance, will wrap-up up regular season play Saturday by visiting Elon for a 12 noon battle.
