Women's Tennis Dominant on First Day of ECU Invitational

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Hosting its first fall tournament of the fall season, the East Carolina women’s tennis team recorded nine singles wins and split its six doubles matches on the first day of the ECU Invitational Friday afternoon at the River Birch Tennis Park.
The day began with doubles action, where the duo comprised of sophomore Nicole LaDuca and senior Neena Wanko outlasted Norfolk State’s Liza Gordeeva and Krystal Scott, 8-4, in the first doubles flight. Senior Melis Tanik and junior Dana Gray followed suit in the second flight with an 8-7 triumph over North Carolina Central’s Aissa Muamba and Lynsey Cover. Junior Karling Watson and freshman Maria Storozheva rounded out ECU’s doubles victories with an 8-4 victory over NCCU’s Mia Ramic and Tamara Jeremic.
The Pirates came out strong in singles play, combining for nine victories in 12 total matches across six flights, which included three players recording multiple wins.
Freshman Michelle Castro put herself in the win column twice on the day, defeating Norfolk State’s Macchiavello (6-2, 6-1) and NCCU’s Rebecca Wood (6-2, 6-3).
Groeneveld also defeated Muamba, 6-4, 6-2, and Norfolk State’s Yvonne Kamegne, 6-0, 6-0, while Walston downed Cover, 6-2, 6-0 and Norfolk State’s Ana Popovic, 6-2, 6-3.
Gray, Watson and Tanik each collected one singles win on the day.
East Carolina will conclude play in the ECU Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 5. Matches are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., at the River Birch Tennis Park.
