GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women’s team won 16 of its 20 singles matches and picked up four doubles wins on the final day of the ECU Invitational at the River Birch Tennis Park.

The Pirates began the day with a doubles victory in flight one, where the freshman tandem of Michelle Castro and Emily Groeneveld defeated Norfolk State’s Liza Gordeeva and Krystal Scott, 8-5. Senior Melis Tanik and junior Dana Gray collected an 8-3 victory in flight two over Norfolk State’s Andrea Macchiavello and Mafalda Lhorca.

In flight three, ECU got two 8-1 victories. Junior Karling Watson and freshman Scarlett Walston downed North Carolina Central’s Mia Ramic and Tamara Jeremic, before Castro and Watson teamed up to take down Norfolk State’s Yvonne Kamegne and Ana Popovic.

East Carolina carried their momentum from doubles play into singles action where the Pirates went on to win 80 percent of their bouts, which included three wins apiece from Tanik, Castro and Groeneveld, respectively.

Tanik outlasted NC Central’s Rebecca Wood, 6-1, 6-2, before taking down NSU’s Gordeeva, 7-6 (4), 6-0. The Raleigh, N.C., native concluded her day by dismantling Machiavello, 6-1, 6-0.

Castro also picked up a straight-set win over Gordeeva, 7-5, 6-1, before downing Wood, 6-2, 6-3. She finished her perfect day of singles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Machiavello.
