RALEIGH, N.C. - The East Carolina women's tennis squad enjoyed a strong showing at the 2006 Residence Inn North Wolfpack Fall Invitational last weekend, recording 22 combined singles and doubles wins at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.

Five players - junior Mireia Gol, junior Luiza Borges, junior Zandy Overcash, sophomore Anca Dumitru, sophomore Varinia Soler - all dropped opening matches but bounced back to capture a pair of singles wins on the way to consolation titles. Junior Alex Smith tallied two wins through the winner's bracket and finished with a third-place standing.

Four doubles tandems combined for nine victories, which included a second-place finish and a consolation championship. Gol and junior Hannah Priest opened play with an 8-4 win over Liberty's Erica Fredstrom/Ekaterina Kuznetsova and advanced to the finals after an 8-6 triumph over Richmond's Jessica Hubbard/Xenia Schneider before falling 8-3 in the title match to N.C. State's Kristen Bleakley/Berkeley Brock.

After suffering an opening round loss, Dumitru and Soler rolled off wins against James Madison's Anna Khoor/Mary Napier (8-5), Coastal Carolina's Sarize Coetzee/Nicole Lemmerer (8-5) and Wofford's McKenzie Carson/Cayley Wetzig (8-6) to earn the consolation prize.

The Lady Pirates will be back in action October 12-15 at the ITA Regional Championships on the campus of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
