Women's Tennis Splits Matches in Charleston
02/09/2004 CHARLESTON, S.C. -- A win over Columbia College and a loss to College of Charleston gave East Carolina's women's tennis team a split of dual matches played in Charleston, S.C., on Saturday.
The Lady Pirates' record now stands at 3-4. ECU began the day with a 7-0 loss to the host College of Charleston Cougars. The defending Southern Conference champions and 2003 NCAA Tournament participants won two of the three doubles matches then claimed wins at all six singles flights. The ECU loss was not without a fight, however. Kirstin Buchanan and Raluca Baicu won at flight one doubles, 8-5, and teammates Gillie Bailey and Cristina Meilicke took their singles opponents to tie-breakers before falling. The Lady Pirates returned to the court later in the day to hand NAIA Columbia College at 7-0 defeat. ECU was victorious in all three doubles and six singles matches, including 8-0 wins over the Fighting Koalas at flights one and two in doubles and 6-0, 6-0 wins in the first three singles flights. ECU returns to the Palmetto State this Friday (3 p.m.) as it takes on South Carolina State in Orangeburg.
