Women's Tennis Sweeps Charleston Southern

Greenville, N.C. --- The East Carolina women's tennis team earned its fourth win of the season by defeating Charleston Southern, 7-0, in its home opener Thursday at the ECU Tennis Complex.

ECU (4-2) earned the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. The No. 1 doubles tandem of Kirstin Buchanan and Mireia Gold defeated Meryam Tanzi and Rebecca Franzi, 8-4, while the No. 3 doubles team of Gillie Bailey and Luiza Borges eased by Ashley Heard and Jessica Bear, 8-2. The No. 2 doubles team of Raluca Baicu and Alex Smith earned a 9-8 win over Nazli Kutuk and Patricia Jaeger.

In singles action, ECU won five of the six matches in straight sets. Baicu was forced into a third set by Jaeger at No. 3 singles, but was able to hold off her challenger, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0. Bailey won 6-3, 6-3 over Tanzi at No. 1 singles, while Gol was a 6-4, 7-6 winner over Franzi at No. 2. Buchanan, Borges and Hannah Priest each recorded straight set victories in the lower half of the lineup.

The Pirates return to action Saturday, February 12, with matches at North Carolina A&T and High Point.
