ECU Women's Tennis Sweeps Panthers And Aggies
02/13/2005 Greenville, N.C. --- The East Carolina women's tennis team defeated North Carolina A&T and High Point, 7-0, on Saturday to improve their overall record to 6-2 this season. The Pirates began the day in Greensboro with a match against N.C. A&T. ECU won all six singles matches in straight sets and didn't lose a game in five of the 12 sets played. Mireia Gol earned a victory at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Raluca Baicu, Luiza Borges and Hannah Priest each claimed 6-2, 6-0 victories at the next three flight positions, while freshmen Alex Smith and Zandy Overcash won at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. ECU swept the doubles point with wins of 8-1, 8-0, and 8-1. Matches against High Point were more competitive, but the end result was another shutout victory. Junior Kirstin Buchanan won at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 victory, while junior Gillie Baliey won at No. 2 singles. Gol, Baicu, Borges and Priest each recorded their second win of the day during the match. ECU won two of the three doubles matches to claim the point. ECU returns to action on Tuesday at 1 p.m. against Campbell in Cary, N.C.
