Women's Tennis Tops Mount Olive, 6-1
03/12/2003 GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina University's women's tennis team won its second straight match and improved its record to 7-4 by beating Mount Olive on Wednesday afternoon by a score of 6-1.
The Lady Pirates swept the doubles competition and won five of the six singles matches. Mount Olive falls to 3-4 overall. ECU's Lyndall Jordan and Raluca Baicu edged MOC's top duo of Lucia Henkle and Mariana Shimoda, 9-7, in the flight one doubles match, which proved to be the most closely contested match of the day. Lady Pirates Paulina Sierpinski and Kirstin Buchanan cruised past Samanthi Wijesekera and Ashley Westbrook, 8-3, in the only other doubles match played. Mount Olive did not have the required number of participants and dropped the flight three doubles and flights five and six singles by default. Mount Olive's bright spot came at flight one singles where Lucia Henkle remained unbeaten with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over ECU's Jordan. Baicu, Sierpinski, and Lauren Perry all won their respective singles matches for the Lady Pirates in straight sets. The Lady Pirates return to action on March 20 when they travel to Richmond for a 2 p.m. contest. East Carolina 6, Mount Olive 1
