Sept. 12, 2005
WILMINGTON, N.C. - Sophomore Mireia Gol earned a first-place finish after rolling to a 3-0 record to highlight the East Carolina women's tennis squad's season-opening participation in the UNC Wilmington/Landfall Invitational at the Country Club of Landfall Sept. 9-11. In all, Gol dropped just four games in six overall sets during weekend. After registering a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Elon's Whitney Butcher in the opener Friday, Gol followed with straight-set 6-0, 6-0 victories against Katie Nicholson (Elon) and Lucia Henkle (Mt. Olive). In addition to capturing all three of her singles' matches, Gol also teamed with freshman Presley Thomas to post a 2-1 doubles record after logging wins over tandems from UNC Wilmington and Elon. In other singles play, Thomas rebounded from a pair of early setbacks to record a 6-4, 6-1 win over UNCW's Kate Marshall Sunday afternoon. The Pirates will be back in action this weekend when they compete at the College of Charleston (S.C.) Invitational. FRIDAY, SEPT. 9 SATURDAY, SEPT. 10 SUNDAY, SEPT. 11
