Men's, Women's Tennis Teams Return to Action
09/24/2003

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina will play host to four visiting tennis teams this weekend as the Pirate men and women compete in the ECU Fall Invitational, scheduled for Thursday through Saturday.

Competing in the flighted, round-robin tournament will be Mount Olive, Elon, Charleston Southern, and High Point, along with ECU's men and women. Team scoring will not be used.

With a five-team field, matches will be split between the courts at the ECU Tennis Complex and the nearby courts of J.H. Rose High School in Greenville. Play begins at ECU on Thursday afternoon with the Pirates playing singles matches against Mount Olive. The ECU men begin play at 4 p.m. with the women scheduled to start at 5 p.m.

A full slate of matches are on tap for Friday beginning with the Pirate women playing Elon in singles at 10 a.m. Play continues at the ECU courts throughout the day, with the final match slated to begin at 8 p.m.

Singles and double play will continue on Saturday at both locations with matches scheduled to conclude by midday.

ECU's men opened their fall season two weeks ago by hosting a four-team tournament. The Pirates won 10 of their 12 singles matches, including two wins by senior Charl Meyer who has now won 14 straight dating back to the spring.

"Elon beat us last year and High Point was a top 15 team in the region," ECU head coach Tom Morris said of the men's competition. "We hope to compare better to those teams than we did a year ago."

This weekend's competition will be the first of the season for the Lady Pirates.

"This fall will be a very different season for our girls with only three of our top six players returning," Morris said. "This will be a semester where we have to rely on some new players to step up and this weekend should be good experience for them."

Complete tournament results will be posted at the end of each day on www.ECUpirates.com.
