Women's Tennis Concludes Play At ITA Regional Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –– The East Carolina women's tennis team competed at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships on the campus of Wake Forest University this past weekend.

The doubles team of Kirstin Buchanan and Mireia Gol advanced to semifinals of the championships before bowing out to eventual champions Julia Coin and Alix Lacelarie of Clemson (3-8). Buchanan/Gol advanced to the semifinals with an opening round win over Sariz Coetzee and Marie Matrka of Coastal Carolina (8-3), and a quarterfinal victory over the Charleston Southern team of Patricia Jaeger and Tazi Meryam (8-3).

The ECU doubles tandem of Gillie Bailey and Alex Smith were eliminated by Larisa Bekmatova and Danelle Moita of Winthrop in the opening round (2-8).

In singles action, Buchanan won her opening qualifying round match by defeating Jaeger in straight sets (6-1, 6-0), before losing to Danielle Schwartz of Wake Forest in the qualifying round finals (4-6, 5-7).

In the main singles draw, Gol lost in straight sets to ninth-seeded Kendall Cline of North Carolina (0-6, 1-6).

The Pirates will conclude thier fall season at the Southern Intercollegiate Tournament in Columbia, S.C. this weekend.
