Women's Tennis Concludes Season At Southern Intercollegiate
11/01/2004 COLUMBIA, S.C. –– The East Carolina University women's tennis team wrapped up its fall season this past weekend by competing at the 2004 Southern Intercollegiate on the campus of the University of South Carolina. Mireia Gol and Hannah Priest each won the consolation bracket of her respective flight, while Alex Smith lost in the championship match of her flight. Smith, a freshman from Greenville, opend play with a pair of straight set victories to reach the semifinals, where she defeated Vesna Popac of South Carolina State in three (6-2, 5-7, 6-3). In the finals, the Gamecocks' Audrey George defeated Smith in straight sets (3-6, 4-6) to capture the C2 Singles Flight. After losing their opening round matches, Gol and Priest each swept through their consolation brackets as neither player lost a set. Gol defeated Marti Morris of Furman (6-1, 6-2) to win the A2 Singles consolation bracket, while Priest downed College of Charleston's Jenna Marks (6-1, 6-0) to win the C1 Singles consolation. Gillie Bailey finished third in the B2 Singles flight advancing to the semifinals before bowing out. Bailey, along with doubles' partner Smith, reached the championship match of the C1Doubles Draw and fell to Wofford's duo of Sara Shelley and Tara Hartness. -ecupirates.com-
