COLUMBIA, S.C. - Freshman
Logan Beam posted a 4-0 record in singles play to headline a total of 20 team match victories as the East Carolina women's tennis squad officially closed out its fall schedule at the University of South Carolina's Southern Intercollegiate Tournament last weekend.
Beam also teamed with sophomore Alex Smith to post a 2-1 record in doubles competition during the event, which was held at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center.
Beam logged straight-set victories in all four matches, starting with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over North Carolina State's Lauren Barry and a 6-0, 6-0 triumph against Jennifer Hancock of the College of Charleston. She followed with wins against Kendall Graves of Appalachian State (6-0, 6-3) before closing out with a 6-2, 6-1 victory vs. USC-Upstate senior Zarah DeSilva.
Sophomore Mireia Gol also enjoyed a strong showing at the event, knocking off Armstrong Atlantic's Johanna Dahlback (6-4, 1-6, 6-3) and Mateja Podgorsek of Georgia State (6-1, 6-1). After falling to Chattanooga's Anastasia Zhukova (6-4, 6-0), Gol rebounded to defeat South Carolina State's Milana Borisev before teaming with freshman Anca Dumitru for a win against the Appalachian State duo of Frances Blanton and Salem Kirven.
Also posting singles wins for ECU were Smith (3), sophomore Luiza Borges (2), freshman Presley Thomas (2), senior Gillie Bailey and Dumitru.
The Pirates will open their spring season January, 21, 2006 at UNC-Asheville.
