12/10/2003

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Freshman Lindsey Rosales and junior Tammie Mentzel tied for first place in the pole vault to lead the East Carolina Women's Track team in the indoor season opener at the CNU Lidlifter Classic hosted by Christopher Newport University last Sunday. ECU only had athletes in competition in field events.

Mentzel and Rosales both posted jumps of 11-6 breaking Mentzel's previous ECU record of 11-5.75 set last Feb. at George Mason. Senior Nicole Marchewka placed fifth with a jump of 10-6.

In the 20-pound weight throw, freshman Jessica Georgio threw 43-9.5 to place second. Fellow freshman Emily Thompson recorded a throw of 42-6.75 to finish third while freshman Chelsea Salisbury finished fifth with a throw of 37-7.25.

"It was a nice opener to the season," ECU head women's track coach Matt Munson said. "We were able to compete very well in a relaxed but competitive environment and achieve significant success. Now our focus shifts to final exams and getting ready for the full competitive indoor and outdoor season next semester."

ECU will next be in action Jan. 16-17 when the Lady Pirates travel to the Carolina Fast Times in Chapel Hill.
