Pirates Split A Pair Of Matches At The East Carolina Classic

ECU-Bethune Cookman Box Score | ECU-Charlotte Box Score | GREENVILLE, N.C. --- East Carolina closed out play at the 2012 East Carolina Classic by going 1-1 on the final day of competition. The Pirates opened the day with a 3-1 victory over Bethune-Cookman, but fell to Charlotte in straight sets, 3-0, to close out the event. The Pirates' victory over Bethune-Cookman snapped a 25-match losing streak dating back to last season. Prior to this afternoon's win, the Pirates' last victory was Sept. 9, 2011 against UNC Wilmington. After splitting the first two sets with the Wildcats (25-17, 20-25), the Pirates cruised to 25-12 and 25-8 wins in the third and fourth set. Junior Nicole Willis posted her second consecutive double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Junior Hannah Allgood also had double figure kills with 11, while Shelby Beasley recorded 12 digs. Beasley recorded 49 digs during the three-match competition and was named to the all-tournament team. The Pirates held a 9-8 edge over Bethune-Cookman in the third set, but out-scored the Wildcats 16-4 to go up 2-1. They followed that by racing out to a 15-5 lead in the fourth set with Allgood serving the final seven points. After suffering a 25-11 loss in the opening set to the49ers, ECU battled back in the second set to rally from an 18-10 deficit to claim a 22-19 advantage. However, Charlotte knotted the game at 23-all as the two teams played beyond the 25-point mark. Tournament MVP Bianca Rouse gave the 49ers a 29-28 lead before Christian Drake scored the final point to give Charlotte a 30-28 second set victory. The third set was also a two-point affair with the 49ers etching out a 25-23 victory. Willis led the Pirates with 10 kills and recorded 50 in the three matches over the weekend. Beasley (12) and Campbell (10) both had double digit digs. ECU will return to action Friday, Aug. 31 against Southeast Missouri State in the opening game of the Milwaukee Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee.
