ECU Falls To No. 12 Ohio State, 3-0

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. - East Carolina dropped the first match of the 2005 BGSU Invitational Tournament to nationally-ranked Ohio State Friday, 3-0, at Anderson Arena. The Pirates lost two of their three games against the Buckeyes by a combined five points.
Senior outside hitters Pam Ferris and Erica Wilson led the way for ECU (3-3), picking up nine and eight kills respectively. Middle blockers Kim Jefferson and Jaime Bevan also played well, combining on 13 kills. Setter Heidi Krug tallied 27 assists on the day while Trish Monroe and Katie Jannusch were the leaders defensively. Monroe led ECU with 12 digs while Jannusch finished with 10. Bevan picked up one solo block and three block assists while Krug also recorded two block assists.
Nicole Britenriker's 14 kills topped OSU's offensive attack while Danielle Meyer and Caitlin Slevin also contributed offensively with 11 kills apiece. Amanda Miller led Ohio State (4-1) with 41 assists while Meyer led the team with nine digs. Slevin also tallied three of OSU's seven service aces.
ECU hit .196 as a team while OSU hit .322, highlighted by an attack percentage of .412 in the final game. The Pirates out-blocked the Buckeyes, 4.0-to-3.0, while OSU finished with 50 assists to ECU's 30.
The Pirates gave the Buckeyes a tough battle in the first and the third games. OSU edged out ECU 30-27 in game one before taking the second game convincingly, 30-17. ECU took Ohio State down to the wire in the third and final game before falling, 30-28.
The Pirates will play two matches Saturday afternoon on day two of the BGSU Invitational Tournament at Anderson Arena. ECU will square off against host Bowling Green at 12:30 p.m. before taking on Chicago State at 4 p.m.
