Charlotte Downs Pirate Volleyball 3-1

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The East Carolina volleyball team dropped its second match in as many days as the Pirates fell to Charlotte 3-1 (31-29, 30-24, 30-14, 30-24) in the second day of the Comfort Suites Charlotte Invitational at Halton Arena. The Niners improve to 6-4 while ECU drops to 4-5.
Despite the loss, senior setter Heidi Krug became the all-time assist leader in East Carolina history with her 45 assists on the afternoon. She now has 3,509 total assists.
The Pirates jumped on top of Charlotte 8-5 early in game one thanks to three straight Charlotte errors. The Niners tied the game at eight, but ECU built and maintained a small lead all the way to leading 25-20 in the late stages of the opening frame.The 49ers then went on an 8-3 run to tie the match at 28. That run included a pair of kills by junior outsite hitter Cori Dayton. Dayton finished with the match-high 24 kills for the afternoon. Charlotte was able to win three of the next four points and take the opening game.
ECU fired back in the second game, getting Charlotte in a quick 12-6 hole, thanks to the arm of junior Kelley Wernert, who had three kills on that run. Wernert and teammate Mignon Dubenion led the Pirates with 14 kills each. Charlotte closed to within two at 24-22, but the Niners would get no closer and the match was tied at 1-1.
The Niners proved to be too much for the Pirates, taking the final two games to win the match.
Charlotte setter Eden Ramos had 58 assists in the match and junior Alma Arroyo paced the defense with 19 digs. Charlotte had nine service aces to just one for the Pirates. Dayton and Arroyo has three aces each. The Pirates were led on the defense by Hannah Fenker and Stephanie Turner with 10 digs each. Dubenion also contributed up front with three assisted blocks
East Carolina returns to the court tonight to take on Penn in the Pirates final match of the Comfort Suites Invitational at 5 p.m.
