Volleyball Picks Up Third Straight Shutout

GREENVILLE, N.C.- East Carolina picked up its third straight shutout victory in a 3-0 win over Southern Miss Sunday inside Minges Coliseum. Kelley Wernert's 13 kills led four Pirates with double-figure kills as ECU won 30-25, 30-25, 30-21.
ECU moves above .500 in conference with the win, improving to 3-2 in league play and 11-6 overall. With their eleventh win this season, the Pirates have now equaled their win total from last season. The Golden Eagles drop to 5-8 overall and 3-2 in C-USA play.
In addition to Wernert, Erica Wilson, Jaime Bevan and Mignon Dubenion all finished with double-digit kills for ECU. Wilson recorded 11 kills while Bevan and Dubenion each picked up 10. Dubenion led the Pirates with a .643 attack percentage, recording just one error on 14 attack attempts. Heidi Krug recorded her second straight double-double with 41 assists and a team-high 12 digs. Krug also added four kills, two service aces, one solo block and one block assist. Defensively, Ferris added seven digs while Caitlin Daly and Trish Monroe each added six.
Ashley Petrinec and Morgan Johnson each picked up seven kills to lead Southern Miss while Jazzmien Stephens and Amber Bloom tallied six and five kills respectively. Ednali Serralta led the Golden Eagle offense with 25 assists while also recording four kills and six digs. Petrinec also led USM with seven kills while Kaitlyn Deutsch finished with four of the team's seven service aces.
The Pirates out-hit the Golden Eagles .349-to-.142 on the match, including a game-high .432 ECU hitting percentage in the final game. East Carolina also recorded 45 assists to the Golden Eagles' 27 while the Pirates also out-dug USM, 43-29. The two teams each finished with seven service aces while ECU recorded one more total team block than USM.
ECU returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 11 when the team travels to Conway, S.C. to face Coastal Carolina in non-conference action before hitting the road next weekend with trips to Memphis on Friday and UAB on Saturday.
