Volleyball Hangs Tough But Falls To Green Wave

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The East Carolina volleyball team kept the action in New Orleans, La., close on Friday night before falling to Tulane University 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-18) inside Fogelman Arena. The Pirates now slip to 11-12 on the year and 1-7 in Conference USA action while Tulane improves to 15-5, including a nearly flawless 6-1 mark in C-USA.
Action in the beginning of the match resulted in a 3-3 tie before Tulane won the next four points to open up a 7-3 lead. The Green Wave would then extend its lead to 12-6, 14-7, and 20-12 before putting away the set 25-15. Stephanie Turner, Melissa Zentner and Amanda Lutzow all tallied two kills in the opener. Trish Monroe picked up five digs and Zentner and Hannah Fenker both collected four.
The second set also featured the score being knotted at three points each and was tied as late in the match as 8-8. ECU stayed within two points of the Green Wave until trailing 15-13. Tulane then won the next two points to take the four point lead at 17-13 and then a five point lead at 20-15. The Green Wave then won five of the last six points of the set to win 25-16.
In the third and final set, the Pirates held their largest lead of the match, at 6-4 over Tulane. East Carolina continued to hang tough throughout the set and trailed by just one point at 10-9 and 13-12. The Green Wave held a five point lead at 19-14 before the Pirates rallied and closed the gap to three points at 20-17. ECU could not complete the comeback, however, as Tulane again stiffened at the end of the set and won 25-18.
Turner led the way for the Pirates on offense with eight kills during the match while Erica Banning added six. Monroe tallied 12 digs and Fenker picked up her third double-double of the season with 20 assists and 12 digs. Lizzy Bruin and Turner both picked up two blocks on the night to lead the team.
East Carolina next travels to El Paso, Texas, and faces UTEP on Sunday afternoon. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
