Pirates Shutout Golden Eagles To Advance To Second Round

HOUSTON, Texas--Fifth-seeded East Carolina defeated No. 12 Southern Miss Thursday afternoon, 3-0, in first round action at the 2005 Conference USA Volleyball Championship at Rice's Autry Court. First-team All-Conference USA performer Pam Ferris, who finished with 17 kills, led ECU to their third shutout over the Golden Eagles this season.
With the win, ECU (20-10) will advance to the second round where the Pirates will face No. 4 UTEP on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. EST. Southern Miss finishes the season with a record of 6-19 overall.
Kelley Wernert nearly matched Ferris' kill total, recording 16, while Erica Wilson also finished in double-figure kills with 11. Ferris also led the defense with 16 digs, recording her team-best 16th double-double on the season and her sixth in the last eight matches. Trish Monroe finished with 13 digs while Caitlin Daly and Wernert added six and five respectively. Heidi Krug directed the Pirate offense, recording 47 assists while also adding three block assists on the defensive side. Mignon Dubenion, who finished with seven kills on the night, led the Pirates with three solo blocks.
Stevi Cherry was the top force offensively for Southern Miss, hitting .484 on the night, recording 18 kills and just three errors on 31 attack attempts. Cherry finished with a double-double, collecting a team-high 10 digs while Ednali Serralta led the offense with 39 assists. Serralta and Jazzmien Stephens led the defense with two block assists apiece.
The Pirates won in three straight games, 30-21, 30-28, 30-27. ECU out-hit Southern Miss .433-to-.240 in game one with Ferris leading the way for ECU with eight kills. Wernert and Ferris each recorded six kills while Ferris recorded 11 of her 16 digs in the second game as ECU took a two-game lead over the Golden Eagles with a two-point win. ECU sealed the victory in game three, out-hitting Southern Miss, .455-to-.171 with Wernert collecting a game-high eight kills.
