HOUSTON, Texas--East Carolina fell to fourth-seeded UTEP Friday afternoon at Autry Court, ending the Pirates' run in the 2005 Conference USA Volleyball Championship. The Pirates finish the season with an overall record of 20-11, the school's best mark since the 1982 team finished 24-13. The Miners shutout the Pirates 30-25, 31-29, 30-25 to advance into the semifinals where they will face top-seeded Marshall on Saturday.

Mignon Dubenion led ECU offensively with 11 kills while Pam Ferris and Erica Wilson each added 10. Libero Trish Monroe led the defense with 13 kills while Ferris collected 11, giving the senior outside hitter her third double-double in a row. Heidi Krug finished with 47 assists for the second consecutive match while also tallying seven digs. The Pirates collected only four total blocks as a team with Wilson leading the way with two block assists.

Kari Stacey recorded 17 kills to lead the Miners while Christie Murphy and Brook Peugh added 12 and 10 kills respectively. UTEP setter Katie Smith finished with 46 assists while also contributing defensively with four blocks. Brittany Stowers was the key on defense for UTEP, collecting 16 digs while Jaymie Swift pitched in with eight. Peugh was the top blocker for the Miners, ending the match with two solo blocks and three block assists.

 

 

UTEP out-hit the Pirates .236-to-.188 in the first game en route to a 30-25 victory. Stacey recorded nine kills in the first game, over half of her match total while Wernert, Wilson and Ferris all finished the game with four. Both teams hit .333 in the second game with the Miners edging out a 31-29 win over ECU. The Pirates recorded three more kills than UTEP in the game but were hurt by five service aces. UTEP ended the Pirates' season with a 30-25 win in the third and final game, out-hitting ECU .341-to-.257.
